One of its best and enormous beautiful places is Stainsby Mill. This is a small working mill situated just outside the entrance to the Hardwick Hall estate. Stainsby Mill offers visitors the chance to see a 19th Century watermill in full working order, set in some of the most attractive Derbyshire countryside you could imagine. The enormous 17-foot waterwheel turns and powers the grinding millstones, producing fresh flour that is available for sale on site. The miller is only there on a Thursday but the guides are very knowledgeable about the mill stones and how the flour is ground. You can park almost outside and aim to spend about 20-30 minutes unless the miller is there in which case you might spend longer. Free for NT members so other people might think it expensive for a short visit. The National Trust has been entrusted with the upkeep and preservation of this fascinating piece of industrial history.
